This intriguing outdoor documentary about the inhabitants of a Northern Siberian village was made by a German production company with a Russian director — Dmitri Vasyukov — and crew, but it’s the voiceover English-language narration by Werner Herzog that really puts a stamp on it. Suddenly, the rugged individualism of the people of Bakhtia takes on a Herzog-ish flair, as hunters, fur trappers, and their dogs tromp through the snow trying to survive the winter. The English version, recut by Herzog’s ace editor Joe Bini with the narration rewritten by Herzog and his son Rudolph, fits very tidily into the filmography alongside Encounters at the End of the World and Grizzly Man (94 min.)
Director: Dmitry Vasyukov
Producer: Klaus Badelt, Timur Bekmambetov, Werner Herzog and Yanko Damboulev
