The most exciting science-fiction space adventure ever made. Director Alfonso Cuarón artfully combines a relatively straightforward space-shuttle disaster scenario with his two-character cast – astronauts Sandra Bullock and George Clooney – and brings it to top speed with an absolutely astounding display of visual fireworks, as a routine day orbiting the Earth spirals into a life-or-death struggle on the edge of emptiness. The visual effects by Tim Webber are a quantum leap forward from anything previous, and the combination of stressed characters and frantic pacing gives us no time to catch our breath. We’re hurled and whirled for ninety minutes. As usual, Cuarón (Children of Men, Y Tu Mamá También), who wrote the screenplay with his son Jonás Cuaron, places all the frantic action in a believable human framework. The result is a masterpiece (91 min.).
