Serving classic Italian fare in the same comfortable, earth-toned, softly glowing space since 1961, Giovanni is one of the last still-standing Berkeley restaurants enlivening the childhood memories of local folks aged fifty-plus. The ravioli is still made in the exact same way by the exact same hands: sous chef Juan Sanchez has been doing it for forty years. Original owner Giovanni Schipani sold the place in 1987, then bought it back in 2010; now it's a family outfit again. Pasta, pizza, sandwiches, and other favorites — the Italian standbys that are programmed into the sensory hard drive of most anyone who grew up in Europe or North America — are served here in generous portions, with fabulous soft-centered, steaming-hot, herb-specked, house-made foccacia on the side. If you know what's good for you, order the tiramisu.
