Francine Prose

When: Wed., May 14, 7:30 p.m. 2014
With the recent success of books like The Goldfinch (which just won a Pulitzer), the last year or so has been good for literary-minded page-turners, and Lovers at the Chameleon Club, Paris 1932, the latest novel from beloved and super-prolific Francine Prose (who will read from it this week at Mrs. Dalloway’s, 2904 College Ave., Berkeley), is a very welcome addition to the canon. Set (shocker!) in a Paris that’s celebrating the end of one World War and teetering on the edge of another, the book follows the patrons of the titular (and fictional) haven for outsiders and artists — in particular Lou, an elite athlete, cross-dressing lesbian, and, ultimately, tragic hero — over twenty years in a rapidly changing Europe. Like its setting, Chameleon Club has a gorgeous sheen and a grotesque core; also like its setting, it’s utterly intoxicating.
