Layer cakes have become something of a relic in today's pastry case. Mousse cakes, tortes, and elaborately dressed cheesecakes have ascended to prominence while the humble iced-yellow cake is nowhere to be found. Except, that is, at a few bakeries that still appreciate the art of fluffy, buttery, sweet, heavenly cake. It's All Good Bakery is one such spot. In the shadow of the elevated BART tracks along MLK Jr. Way, the bakers ensure that it is, indeed, all good. The yellow layer cake with chocolate icing recalls the best cupcakes of your youth. The cake is light but flavorful and the icing is fudgy and thick. The strawberry layer cake, available only in the spring, boasts freshly sliced strawberries and whipped cream sandwiched between layers of yellow cake. The German chocolate cake, the only one (aside from custom orders) made from chocolate batter, is generously coated and filled with an addictive coconut-pecan frosting. Another delicious option is the coconut pineapple cake, a yellow cake filled with pineapple jam and frosted with coconut icing. The layer cakes run from $2.75 to $3.50 for a generous piece. Sheet cakes range from $25 to $90.
