What better way to celebrate the Halloween season than by gathering halfway between Livermore and Tracy and watching cars crash into each other ‘neath the moonlight? You’ll have a spooktacular time this Saturday at Altamont Motorsports Park’s Pumpkin Smash 400 Enduro and Halloween Double Destruction Derby. The Enduro segment features “400 extreme laps of enduro madness” for factory stock enduro cars, while the ever-popular Destruction Derby (see cover story “Eve of Destruction,” August 18) is divided into separate classes for four- and eight-cylinder engines — the better to keep the Detroit Iron from unfairly pulverizing the Rice Rockets. General admission is $12, seniors and kids six to twelve $6, kids five and under free — and there are free Halloween treats for the first five hundred little smasheroos. Races start at 6 p.m., grandstand opens at 3. Altamont (yes, that Altamont) is located at 17001 Midway Rd., outside Tracy. Info: 925-606-0274 or AltamontRaceway.com — Kelly Vance

Calling all outdoor adventurers looking for a scenic way to spend the day in the East Bay outback: Greenbelt Alliance has a hike for you! This Saturday, intrepid trekkers in good shape are invited to take the East Bay Watershed Hike in Contra Costa County. Described by Greenbelt as a “strenuous backcountry trek along stunning Rocky Ridge in the East Bay MUD lands between Moraga and Las Trampas,” the twelve-mile, all-day hike with great views (and a 2,000-to-3,000-foot elevation gain) begins at 10 a.m. Check Greenbelt.org for more details. — Kelly Vance

Olé, Olé Olé Olé!

The Cal men’s soccer team has a good thing going this season. The Bears went 7-0-2 before finally losing their first game to U. of Washington, and Cal is currently ranked number eight nationally. Much of that prestige is thanks to the superb play of junior midfielder Nick Hatzke, senior midfielder Yohei Fukuda, and sophomore defender Steve Purdy. This coming weekend, the team takes a quick southern road trip to face always-formidable UCLA, but first it has to contend with UC Davis. This Thursday afternoon (2 p.m.), see Cal take on UC Davis at Edwards Stadium on the UCB campus. For more details, visit CalBears.collegesports.com/sports/m-soccer — Kelly Vance
