Lately, the thought that has struck me most at metal shows is that the metal scene has gotten pretty weird. And by "weird" I mean that a genre of already-extreme music has morphed and experimented so much from its beginnings that what now unites the scene's tiny but rabid fanbase is both delightful and baffling. Case in point: Enslaved. This Norweigan black metal band started off straight-forward enough (fast tempos, distorted guitars, raspy vocals, lyrics about Vikings), but over the years has toyed with song structure, melodies, rhythm, and vocals to create grandiose music that's earned it comparisons to Pink Floyd. Its twelfth album, 2012's RIITIIR, shows the band's ambitiousness only growing, yet within the odd tempos, shifting moods, complex riffing, and serene vocals, there is something that speaks deeply to metal fans. I'm not going to overthink it. At Slim's (333 11th St., San Francisco) on Saturday, Feb. 9, with Pall Bearer, Royal Thunder, and Ancient VVisdom. 8 p.m., $17. SlimsPresents.com
