This China-Taiwan-Hong Kong co-production is evidently being released late in the US in the wake of subsequently produced Chinese historical epics, but it deserves to stand on its own merits. As imagined by Bay Area-based director/screenwriter Christina Yao, it profiles the extra-financial adventures of a family of Shanxi province bankers during the tumultuous last years of the Qing Dynasty, when the Boxer Rebellion challenged China’s Western colonizers and the “Wall Street of China” is forced to deal with kidnapping, murder, wolf attacks, and runs on their banks. High production values, gorgeous sets and costumes, excellent lighting and cinematography, plus the spirited playing of Aaron Kwok as the Third Master. Screenplay by Yao and Cheng Yi, from Cheng’s novel. It played the San Francisco International Film Festival in 2010. (113 min.)
