According to esteemed Express book critic Ellen Cushing, Eli Brown's newest novel, Cinnamon and Gunpowder, "could probably best be described as a sort of swashbuckling, seaborne, supremely inventive, and wonderfully strange take on the Scheherazade story." Strange is right; the book somehow successfully weaves together pirate lore, culinary know-how, and a fair dose of romance to boot. Dubbed a "pirate-foodie-adventure novel" by Brown, the whole narrative supposedly came together after a supremely boring afternoon on his living room floor with a yoga DVD he fancifully imagined into having a story much more interesting than it let on. Brown will read from his inventive summer page-turner at Books Inc. (1344 Park St., Alameda).
