The latest addition to Oakland's blossoming nightlife scene has set up shop in a turquoise-tiled Art Deco building at 14th and Webster streets. Disco Volante, set to open in late October, is a bar, music venue, and restaurant run by a trio of Oakland arts and entertainment vets, with chef Douglas Bernstein of Bacar, Eccolo, and Farallon fame serving up local and seasonal California cuisine. Musical offerings will range from bluegrass to Afrobeat, with shows at least three nights a week.
This festive downtown nightspot-restaurant serves an all-day bistro menu of intriguing California-fusion creations like tender, smoky pork ribs with spicy cabbage and fresh pineapple, and tacos stuffed with tempura avocado and jicama slaw, plus a daily-changing menu of dinnertime specials. The dense, chewy coffee flan is a weird and wonderful dessert, the beer list is impressive indeed, and the kitchen is open until at least midnight seven nights a week.
Hours: Mon.-Wed. 11:30 a.m.-midnight; Thu.-Fri. 11:30 a.m.-1:30 a.m.; Sat. 6 p.m.-1:30 a.m.; Sun. 6 p.m.-midnight.
