As far as music genres go, metal is a fairly easy one to parody. And metalheads love to make fun of themselves, as evidenced by the popularity of the web series Vegan Black Metal Chef (which is exactly what it sounds like) and the Adult Swim cartoon series Metalocalypse. The latter centers on the fictional band Dethklok, an extremely popular death metal outfit whose members encapsulate nearly every facet of metal's subgenre tropes: the hulky Cookie Monster vocalist; the womanizing Swedish guitarist; the Norwegian rhythm guitarist who's at odds with the Swede; the shorts-wearing bassist who suffers from an inferiority complex; and Pickles, the drummer with a dreadlocked comb-over. Not long after the show started, the fictional Dethklok became the real band Dethklok, led by Metalocalypse's creator Brendon Small, who also writes all the music. The band quickly became a hit, its debut album charting on the Billboard 200, leading it to tour with bands like Mastodon and perform at major festivals. Essentially, Dethklok became a self-fulfilling prophecy: It just released its third album, Dethalbum III, a tongue-in-cheek mash of melodic death metal, triumphant speed metal, and noodley solos. The band plays with Black Dahlia Murder, All That Remains, and Machine Head at The Fox Theater (1807 Telegraph Ave., Oakland), on Monday, Nov. 26. 6:30 p.m., $35.
