Del the Funky Homosapien

When: Sat., April 27, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $15

If the name Del the Funky Homosapien sounds familiar, it should: The Oakland native is a founding member of the Hieroglyphics Crew, Ice Cube's cousin, and his album No Need for Alarm is cited by critics as one of the defining rap battle albums of the Nineties. But if you don't know Del's name, you will instantly recognize his petulant, playful flow from the rapped verses of Gorillaz' breakthrough single, "Clint Eastwood." Although Del only contributed rhymes to one other Gorillaz track, "Rock the House," also off the band's 2001 self-titled debut, it earned him a platinum record (and perhaps the satisfaction of contributing to the band's best work). Del's twenty-year career has had its ups and downs, including major label battles and long breaks between solo albums, but he's kept busy, contributing to a number of high-profile projects, including Deltron 3030, an Afrofuturist group with Kid Koala and Dan the Automator that plans to release a highly anticipated second album sometime this year. His local shows tend to sell out, so don't miss Del's rare appearance at The Uptown (1928 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) on Saturday, Apr. 27. 9 p.m., $15. UptownNightclub.com
