David Shields

When: Thu., April 11, 5-6 p.m. 2013
Price: free

David Shields defies genre, on principle. "I find it very nearly impossible to read a contemporary novel that presents itself unselfconsciously as a novel, since it's not clear to me how such a book could convey what it feels like to be alive right now," he wrote in his 2010 book, Reality Hunger: A Manifesto. It's a fiercely postmodern ethos that may be a slog for many, but is, for better or worse, always sharply considering what it means to be a participant in today's world. Join the award-winning author of fourteen books this Thursday, Apr. 11, at UC Berkeley's most timeless literary locale, Morrison Library (101 Doe Library, Berkeley), as part of its ongoing Story Hour series. The readings are always open-ended, so given Shields' proclivities, it may be best to leave all preconceived notions of "story time" at the door. 5-6 p.m., free. StoryHour.Berkeley.edu
