Actor Matthew McConaughey has specialized in boy-howdy characters from his home state of Texas, but the true-story role of Ron Woodroof -- a homophobic rodeo cowboy who tests HIV-positive in 1985, changes his mind about the disease, and more or less invents the AIDS drug cocktail --may be his very best. Sure, this McConaughey vehicle may be a brazen, award-seeking, topical heart-warmer, but that doesn’t lessen the crowd-pleasing hamming by the leading man, nor that of Jared Leto as his right-hand she-male, a sympathetic Dallas transsexual named Rayon. More local color than you can shake a wig at, directed with glee by Canadian move-over Jean-Marc Valée. Screenplay by Craig Borten and Melisa Wallack. Also with Jennifer Garner (117 min.).
