Pioneering gypsy flamenco dancer Concha Vargas began performing at the age of eleven. Since then, she has danced in all of Spain’s major festivals, as well as for world leaders including former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Pope John Paul II. And now you, too, will have the opportunity to see her at this weekend’s kickoff of the 8th Annual Bay Area Flamenco Festival at La Peña Cultural Center (3105 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley). Performing alongside Vargas will be guitarist Jose Galvez, singer and dancer Javier Heredia, and singer Kina Mendez, who all traveled from Spain for the event. Preceding the show will be a five-course southern Spanish dinner, including tapas, paella, and desert. The festival, which occurs over the next three weekends at various venues, includes live performances, lectures, film screenings, and master classes.
