Clinic is one of those bands that — despite being around since 1997 and having Radiohead’s Thom Yorke as a fan — people still don’t seem to know about, at least stateside. Perhaps it’s because the Liverpool band makes spastic, dirty-sweet rock that’s often as repetitive, grating, and hyper as electronic music, yet also as dark and sinister as post-punk. Or maybe it’s the fact that the members are known for wearing surgical masks, scrubs, and other costumes onstage, something that seems gimmicky at first, but is actually a nod to early American punk. Or it could be Clinic’s devotion to remaining slightly inaccessible, constantly experimenting on each of its seven albums, yet never fully deviating from the sound it established on its brilliant debut, Internal Wrangler. When a band has been together for sixteen years, there’s chemistry between its members that can only be witnessed live. See for yourself at Rickshaw Stop (155 Fell St., San Francisco) on Thursday, May 2. With No Joy and Popscene DJs. 10 p.m., $15. RickshawStop.com
