Circle Jerks

When: Tue., Jan. 22, 8 p.m. 2008
Price: $17

To say the Circle Jerks are hardcore's equivalent to Forrest Gump is really no exaggeration (not intellectually, but experientially). Not only did they plant the seeds for the late '70s SoCal punk scene, but vocalist Keith Morris was an original member of fellow punk pioneers Black Flag and while guitarist Greg Hetson ended up in Bad Religion after the Circle Jerks' initial break-up. In addition, Not only did tthe Circle Jerks appeared in Penelope Spheeris' seminal documentary The Declinejavascript:popUpBinaryUpload('f:oid:622468:capsuleimage:1') update of Western Civilization, but theyhad a memorable cameo as an acoustic lounge act in Alex Cox's Repo Man, and also had their music featured in his subsequent feature Sid and Nancy. While it's been a decade-plus since the Circle Jerks' last album, (that would be 1995's Oddities, Abnormalities and Curiosities, which featured an other-worldly cameo by pop princess Deborah Gibson), the quartet continues to provide the soundtrack for many a mosh-pit with a mix of classics like "Beverly Hills," "Wasted," and "World Up My Ass," along with bizarre covers of CCR and Garland Jeffreys. L.A. thrash band Hit Me Back and Rise Against offshoot Last of the Believers open the show. Tuesday, Jan. 22 at Slim'sSan Francisco (333 11thth St., San Francisco). 8 p.m., $17.Slims-sf.com Slims-SF.com
