Don De Fremery

Over the last thirty years, De Fremery has led about 800 hikes through the East Bay on behalf of the Sierra Club.

Mount Diablo State Park, Sunol Regional Park, and Ohlone Regional Wilderness - Sunol is one of three parks called wilderness areas. It's not true wilderness, of course, but the park has much more of relationship to the environment than other parks. Sunol doesn't have a merry-go-round like Tilden, but it has programs to introduce children to the natural environment. Ohlone is right next to Sunol and has essentially no amenities, just a few trails and fire roads, four campgrounds, and flat areas for pitching your tent.

Roger Epperson, supervising park ranger - He's just accessible and friendly. One time I was laying out the Diablo Trail in Morgan Territory, and there were these two fire roads around a quarter-mile apart, and the only way to connect the road was to walk along the shoulder of a paved, narrow road, which would be dangerous. I went to Roger and asked to cut a trail there, knowing full well that it would take a couple of months for the idea to be approved. Three weeks later, he called back and said, "Well, I've got that trail already made for you." He wants to make things work for the public.

Mark Abrahams

Abrahams is a member of Grizzly Peak Cyclists, an East Bay bicycle-touring group.

Favorite 200-mile ride - The double centuries Devil Mountain Double and the Terrible Two.

www.calgtriplecrown.org - A Web site for California's hardcore long-distance bikers.

Favorite fuel - A challenging double century even challenges your digestive system. I personally carry maltodextrin (a goo of complex carbohydrates). Some people use Tums to get the calcium. Bananas are almost perfect. They're easy to digest, they're a good source of potassium, and of course they're a good source of carbohydrates. To get the best bike food, I've discovered, just find a good Mexican place and get a good burrito. It's got rice and beans which is carbs, it tastes good, and it's got salsa in it, which replaces electrolytes.
