Longtime Cheese Board worker Jose Ruiz brings a very Berkeley sensibility to his popular taco-joint-slash-panaderia, including Monterey Market-sourced produce and burly guys with names stitched on their shirts competing with university brainiacs for scarce tables. Lard-free and supercheap, the myriad Mexican baked goods are a blast to explore. On the savory side, the carnitas torta contains so much salty goodness it’s best eaten slowly, while the hefty barbacoa tacos make you want to rush home for a siesta.
