The banner of Good Local Ingredients sometimes feels like nothing more than PR babble, but when the stars align, you end up with something like Alameda’s Cafe Q: an unpretentious order-at-the-counter spot that serves the kind of soulful home-style dishes you don’t have time to cook at home. Chef Jesse Branstetter takes American comfort food classics and spruces them up with a dash of Latin flavor and precise, labor-intensive French technique. Highlights on the menu include the roasted-poblano-spiked turkey meatloaf (a twist on albondigas), the slow-braised baby-back ribs, and the pulled pork confit sandwich — a delicious and elegant invocation of Mexican carnitas. The main dining area in back is cozy and quaint, the perfect place to linger for a couple hours with a good book or an old friend.
