Operated by the owner of La Note, the cafe features salads, sandwiches, organic coffees, and sweet and savory pastries, served in a traditional French ambiance with a modern twist.

Café Clem brings a bit of Parisian charm to downtown Berkeley with its antique-y (and tiny) red-tiled interior and pleasant outdoor terrace. The order-at-the-counter cafe is popular with the Berkeley High lunch crowd, but because it lacks a full kitchen — unlike its sister restaurant, La Note — you’re better off sticking to salads and sandwiches. The croque monsieur, while not traditional, is a good riff on a grilled ham and cheese, and the delicious saucisson beurre features high-quality imported French salami on a well-toasted and buttered baguette. Avoid items that would normally be cooked on a stovetop, like scrambled eggs. Meanwhile, an extensive pastry display case features products from a host of local bakeries.
