The owners of Borgo Italia say they’ve sought to create the kind of unpretentious, well-rooted, family-run trattoria that you find everywhere in the Italian countryside — a place serving cucina casalinga, or simple home cooking. It’s the kind of thing every Italian restaurateur talks about, but there is a ring of authenticity here. And even though the carb-heavy menu is somewhat inconsistent, what’s good is really good. Standouts include the torta fritta emiliana — ravioli-shaped squares of puffy fried dough that turn out to be the perfect vehicle for cured meats — and risotto that’s cooked the proper Italian way. Most importantly, don’t sleep on pastry chef Franco Camboli’s creamy, not-too-sweet wares: doughnut-like ciambelli; rich, eggy panna cotta; and some of the best tiramisu in town.
