As colorful and cheery as a Day of the Dead Altar, sans skeletons, Pleasanton's Blue Agave serves alta cocina (haute cuisine), or Mexican food that’s a cut above taqueria fare. It's a little milder than the stuff you’ll find in Oakland’s Fruitvale neighborhood, too, but Blue Agave’s alta cocina translates into slow-food sauces like moles and pipiàns and dishes that are as lovely to look at as they are to eat. Its spectacular tequila selection makes a designated driver a must.
