Shame Medical Pot Crackdown Enforcer Melinda Haag Wednesday at Golden Gate Law School

The San Francisco Chapter of Americans for Safe Access will lead several activist groups in a protest against U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag during her appearance tomorrow (January 23 at 1 p.m.) at Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco.

The maligned prosecutor is scheduled to speak on "The Role of the 21st Century Prosecutor", as part of the National Council on Crime & Delinquency Policy & Practice Panel Series at the law school.

Critics charge Haag's role has been one of an 19th-century federal gendarme, systematically dismantling state-legal medical cannabis dispensaries in her district. She's taken down at least a dozen using federal forfeiture threats to scare landlords into kicking out dispensary tenants. Her efforts have closed about half the clubs permitted by the City of San Francisco, including the highly lauded Vapor Room. She's currently going after Oakland's Harborside Health Center in Oakland. Such closures deprive cities of sales tax revenue, send patients to the black market, and fuel crime, officials argue.

Haag's office doesn't comment on her actions, but the Obama appointee has said that medical marijuana businesses are not immune to enforcement of the federal Controlled Substances Act. President Obama's campaign vow not to spend scarce federal resources on prosecuting lawful medical marijuana patients does not apply to their medicine providers, she believes.

Critics say Haag has wasted government money while citizens in her district die from gun and gang crime, an issue for which she is directly responsible. What's more, there's a number of unlicensed dispensaries in her district that don't pay taxes and don't have local permits, but Haag's skipped over them to focus on the biggest symbols of the growing legitimate medical marijuana movement.
