When the dark sitcom Wilfred launched on cable channel FX this summer — replete with a foul-mouthed talking dog, and copious bong hits out of a little honey bear bottle — a lot of people wondered just where its star, Lord of the Rings hero Elijah Wood, stood on the issue of weed, a schedule one drug. The October issue of High Times dives into the topic with a long Elijah Wood interview on the heels of Wilfred's renewal for a second season. Long story short: Wood has inhaled but it's not his thing:

“To be honest, I'm not really a smoker — it never really sat well with me. ... I have no tolerance for it whatsoever. But I've always been an advocate.”

Wood's "pass on grass" stance is common: according to 2009 federal drug stats, an estimated 104 million Americans age 12 and older have tried pot at least once in their life, representing 41.5 percent of the population. But only about 16.7 million Americans, or 6.6 percent, report smoking it in the last month.

Other notable quotes: “I think that the whole notion that marijuana is illegal is past the point of ridiculousness. I live very close to a very fine dispensary — the Farmacy. ... To me, it should be the standard. It shows what we could achieve — obviously, we have achieved it, because it exists.”

And yes, the Hobbits and Gandalf were weed fans: “There are direct references in the book to pipe-weed. ... pipe-weed is quite pervasive among the hobbits — with the hobbits specifically. They're natural people, living off the land and quite chilled out; they love to eat and sleep. They sound like stoners to me.”
