*STAFF PICK* Popscream 2012: It's become the cliché for indie dance duos: a woman singing vocals backed by a man on synthesizer and keyboards. Standing out among the pack is Brooklyn's Light Asylum, due to Shannon Funchess' Grace Jones-like growl and the aggressive, glitchy, and industrial beats of Bruno Coviello. On top of nailing modern darkwave, Light Asylum also has something to say, crafting lyrics that embrace the androgynous, the multiracial, and your standard misfit. While some of Light Asylum's viewpoints might be savvy marketing, one thing is undeniable: Funchess is mesmerizing live. The duo will headline Popscene's Halloween gala, Popscream 2012, and Popscene resident DJs Aaron, Omar, and Nako will be there spinning indie dance tracks. If you go, fashion a costume that incorporates black leather with an apocalyptic edge. Rickshaw Stop, 155 Fell St., San Francisco. 10 p.m., $13, $15. — Whitney Phaneuf
