11:43 a.m. In contrast to last year's freezing weather, the first day of Outside Lands is proving to be a scorcher.

12:52 p.m. Shade is a rare and highly treasured commodity here.

1:39 p.m. The first band on the Lands End stage, LA noise rockers Autolux starts things off with quiet-loud dynamics, juxtaposing screeching feedback with sinewy basslines and whisperlike vocals. Fans seem intrigued by their raw sound.

1:58 p.m. It'll be a blast from the past here at the first day of Outside Lands. Pearl Jam and Incubus loom in the distance while the crowds swarm in from 25th Avenue.

2:18 p.m. A few crazies are dancing outside the fences. ... Oops, one just went over!

2:37 p.m. Built to Spill's Doug Martsch sporting a full beard and getting into the solo on "The Plan."

3:26 p.m. Chris from Incubus says, "If I could play with any band from the past it would James Brown."
