Thursday Must Read

Today's stories that you shouldn't miss:

1. The mother of a San Francisco man blamed Fox News for radicalizing her son after he was arrested by federal authorities on charges of threatening the life of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over health-care reform.

2. As we’ve previously reported, the possibility of the Warriors moving to San Francisco after the team is sold is remote. That’s because the team still owes the City of Oakland and Alameda County a bundle for the renovation of Oracle Arena in the 1990s. Today, the Trib reports that the Warriors still owe the city and county $105 million, and new team owners would have to pay that off in full if they want to move elsewhere.

3. The ACLU is objecting strongly to the suspension of students at UC Berkeley who were arrested after the chancellor’s home was attacked late last year. And the Chron reports that Cal officials appear to agree with some of the ACLU’s criticisms.

4. The Great Recession has birthed many new, unfortunate terms, from securitized mortgages to credit default swaps. Add a new one — the long-term unemployed. The Chron reports that nearly 23 percent of jobless Americans have been out of work for more than a year, the longest since records began after World War II.

5. Bicyclists will face a stiff new fine for using their cellphones or texting while riding, if a bill in the state Legislature becomes law, the Chron reports.

6. And finally, hats off to the Warriors’ Don Nelson, who became the winningest coach in NBA history last night. There’s no doubt that Nellie, who is expected to retire soon, was a great leader. But he might be best remembered for never having won a championship as coach.
