Bloc Party

When: Thu., Dec. 6, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $35

It's not entirely coincidental that Four is the first Bloc Party album (and the band's most recent) that's caught my attention. For the first time in its nearly ten-year career, the London band incorporates hardcore-ish tendencies into its danceable indie-rock: Grungy, hard-driving guitars anchor the mid-tempo anthem "Kettling," and "We Are Not Good People" is a downbeat rave-up that's as headbangable as the latest stoner rock release. It doesn't always work (the riffs on "Coliseum" sounds like a Rage Against the Machine outtake), but there are still catchy, dancey tracks the band is known for, like the hip-sashaying-inducing "Octopus" and the twitchy post-punk-funk of "Team A." That may not be the Bloc Party its longtime fans are used to, but for new ones, it could be a welcome introduction. At The Fox Theater (1807 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) on Thursday, Dec. 6, with Dum Dum Girls. 8 p.m., $35.
