Nestled up next to Encinal Market, Bip’s is a museum of unapologetically old-school burgers and shakes. The original lunch counter here started slinging burgers sometime in the early 1950s. Bip’s owners reconstructed the space to a spiffy state of Eisenhower-era shine, restoring the U-shaped counter and bolt-down stools and buffing up vintage boomerang-pattern Formica. The Classic Hamburger is just that: freshly ground beef with good char, free of modern intrusions like artisan buns. No-nonsense nostalgia, with fries.
