Big Freedia

When: Sat., Nov. 24, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $13

Choose your underwear carefully before heading out to a Big Freedia gig. The queen of "bounce," a hip-hop genre that originated in the New Orleans underground, Big Freedia inspires the crowd to chant, get low, and strip down into its underwear. Bounce, especially Big Freedia's style, is best heard live, when the full energy of the music reaches its peak. Her show at Public Works in 2010 turned into a sweat-soaked throng of bodies bumping and grinding to "Azz Everywhere," the hit from her breakthrough album Big FreediaHitz Vol. 1. This year's single "Booty-Whop" should inspire a similar gluteus maximus workout, and hopefully she'll play one of the year's campiest guilty pleasures, RuPaul's "Peanut Butter," on which she guest emcees. Oakland-based electroclash rap trio HOTTUB, who recently opened for Kitty Pryde and Main Attrakionz, will also bring the ass-shaking antics to Oakland Metro Operahouse (630 Third St., Oakland) on Saturday, Nov. 24. 8 p.m., $13.
