.Best Year-Old Theater Company

Those Women Productions

Formed in 2014 on International Women’s Day, Berkeley-based Those Women Productions shakes up the patriarchy by providing alternate visions to the work of Dead White Men such as Sophocles, Shakespeare, and Chaucer. The brainchild of playwright-in-residence Carol S. Lashof and managing artistic director Elizabeth L. Vega, the fledgling company performs original work that explores the female experience in myth, folklore, and legend. Last year’s Just Deserts offered an innovative and harrowing take on Oreste’s encounters with The Furies, successfully conveying what audiences most love about Greek tragedy while skewering the tradition’s misogyny. From August 12 to 20 at San Francisco’s Piano Fight, Those Women will stage the world premiere of Lashof’s sexual-harassment-with-a-twist drama, Disclosure. And after putting out a call for new playwrights and play submissions and inviting directors Norman Johnson and Christine Keating to join the team, the growing company is also working on In Plain Sight, a festival of six new short plays based on “the stories you never knew you never knew.” Cinderella, Medea, and the weeping spirit La Llorona are among the opinionated female characters who will challenge the traditional power structure, at Berkeley’s Metal Shop Theater, September 4 through 20.
