For the Bay Area Derby (aka B.A.D.) Girls, the days of roller derby as a fishnets-wearing, hair-pulling, sex-on-wheels theatrical performance are over. With the sport under consideration for inclusion in the 2020 Olympics, and the B.A.D. Girls league ranked internationally, the derby girls have tossed out the lipstick of yesteryear in favor of lifting weights — and it shows. Attend one of their games and you'll witness high levels of athleticism; these are women who aren't afraid to get an elbow to the face, despite the fact that the days of wrestling and clotheslining are behind them. The Richmond Wrecking Belles, Berkeley Resistance, Oakland Outlaws, and San Francisco ShEvil Dead host games eight months of the year, and are a testament to female athletic fierceness. Audience members, however, are free to don tutus as they wish.
