Best Way to Bring Back Dapper

Temescal Alley Barber Shop

Tucked in a cubbyhole space on a side alley behind a cluster of popular restaurants, the Temescal Alley Barber Shop can't help but feel charming. (The same goes for the half-dozen other tiny storefronts in rejuvenated Temescal Alley; location is everything.) Peek inside and the spot only grows more irresistible: retro black-and-white floor tiles laid by co-owner and Oakland resident Brad Roberts, atop which lies a classic cowhide rug; three gorgeous vintage barber chairs, which at any given time are apt to be planted three eager men; and, above it all, the haircuts. Short on the sides and the back, tight to the ears, faded up to a slicked-back or neatly parted mop, clean and dapper as heck. The popular shop's three tattooed barbers will do you right for $22, though you may have to wait; they take walk-ins only. In the meantime, enjoy the vintage tunes — and, if you're lucky, a shot of liquor from the cabinet.
