Best Vintage Evening

Thrillville at the Parkway

Will "The Thrill" Viharo, the Parkway's resident publicist and programmer, wants to help folks who crave food, booze, '20s Prohibition decor, and of course B-movies. Every other Thursday night for the mere price of $6, Will dons his smoking jacket and holds court over the cavernous downstairs theater at Oakland's Parkway, transforming it into Thrillville -- a B-movie extravaganza. Armed with his lovely assistant Monica the Tiki Goddess and assorted props, games, prizes, and film trailers, Will kicks off the evening by leading the movie-obsessed audience through a mire of cornball '50s, '60s, and '70s movie trivia. Questions or comments about kung fu, beach blankets, she-males, beatniks, bikers, '50s nuclear paranoia, and rubber-suited monster men are all fair game. Next comes the film. It can range from the '70s Hong Kong kiddie-film Inframan to the violent '50s atomic noir Kiss Me Deadly. When possible, and because he cares, Will provides helpful commentary throughout -- like which cast members were subsequently busted for drugs or found at the bottom of a lake.
