Best Vintage Clothing Store

Mars Mercantile

Vintage shopping has had its various heydays — the 1990s and 1960s spring immediately to mind as times when subversive cheapskates combined a thrifty outlook with a desire to forge a unique fashion identity. And in both decades, the mainstream eventually caught up with the counterculture, co-opting the looks and jacking up the prices, a practice now so ingrained in our culture that not only can you find mod shifts and buckskin fringe at H&M and Target, but many vintage shops charge more for the genuine article than their knock-off chain-store rivals. Thankfully, Mars Mercantile still offers as wide a range of prices as it does timeframes, with plenty of items retailing at around $20 — which approximates what these guayaberas and day dresses cost back in their day — and only a few inching toward the $100 mark, plus $5-$10 items to satisfy even the brokest shopping jones. So although "old-school vintage" is something of a redundancy, Mars approximates both the experience of vintage shopping before it was completely bought out by the aboveground retail industry, and the price points of the time when these "old-school" garments were new. And unlike other vintage shops (both on the high and low ends) Mars has a healthy selection for the menfolk, too.
