It's nice to walk into a video store and not find a floor-to-ceiling section of shelf devoted to Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo. Instead, Five Star uses the space for sections like its "Independent Spotlight," or its weighty selection of documentaries. This shop is a sanctuary for the true movie buff -- the Berkeley location alone has more than 22,000 titles. Prominently displayed near the front counter are shelves of DVDs devoted to filmmakers like David Lynch and the Coen brothers, or specific genres like "Cult Films." But if you are craving the latest dose of Reese Witherspoon, that's available, too -- the selection of new releases is nothing to scoff at. This is also a great place if you've got kids clamoring for say, a little Lion King. Five Star has an extensive collection of kids' flicks on DVD and VHS -- dirt cheap at $2 for five nights. It also runs a continuous "Rent 2 Get the 3rd Free" deal; new releases are $3.75 for two nights, older titles are $3 for five. And it doesn't hurt that the staff is helpful and movie-savvy.
