For years, vegans and lovers of delicious, crispy, fried things (which is pretty much everyone) could only feast on Flacos’ meatless taquitos at the Berkeley farmers’ markets. But since 2009, they only have to head over to Flacos’ quaint casita just east of Ashby Bart for their taquito fix — although you’ll likely find long lines during its $1 Taquito Tuesdays. In keeping with owner Antonio Magaña’s “¡Feed la Revolucíon!” motto, Flacos serves only organic, locally sourced, and GMO-free ingredients, and a plate of brown rice, beans, salad, and your choice of taco, taquito, or tamale made with soy protein and doused in spicy avocado salsa will fill you up for less than ten dollars. The perfectly balanced flavors will linger on your palate long after your visit.
