For a while there it looked like street dancing died with disco. Then came LA's krumping phenomenon and dance reality shows, which put street dance on the televised stage. The East Bay has its own variation: turf dancing, a mongrel style that mixes elements of popping, locking, and moonwalking with a going-dumb twist. Turfing is one part of the hyphy movement that's still booming; pass any bus stop in Oakland and you might see local kids idly practicing their footwork. The Turf Feinz perfect the body-as-air-hockey-puck glides quintessential to turfing. E-40 could easily be describing crew members Looney or Ironic when he raps, Boy gliding on air/He on his toes like Michael. Turf Feinz is made up of teenagers who pepper their sentences with "you feel me" and hang at Youth Uprising in East Oakland. In their YouTube video "Dead Silence, " two crew members dance out a mime scene with a sweet message: Don't do drugs, come turf!
