.Best (Substantive) Food at a Coffee Shop

Kefa Coffee

The East Bay is now nearing an embarrassment of riches in terms of good coffee shops, and there’s no shortage of places that’ll serve you a decent scone or muffin. But good luck if you want something savory and filling that isn’t a quiche or $8 worth of name-brand lettuce served on name-brand bread. None of the food served at Kefa Coffee is your typical “artisanal” fare, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a better breakfast sandwich in town — the bacon, scrambled egg, and cheese on croissant is divine. Better yet, order the egg salad sandwich, which is a revelation: Topped with crunchy lettuce and crisp bacon, the egg salad itself moist and yolky, with little bits of green olive mixed in, the roll nicely toasted. All of Kefa’s sandwiches are lovingly made to order, and the house coffee is strong and good and even comes with a free refill.
