By now, pretty much every chick wants to strap on a pair of skates and punch people. The Bay Area Derby Girls (B.A.D.), founded in 2004 by a couple of thrill-seeking ladies, helps women act out this fantasy, with tryouts available for their teams: Oakland Outlaws, Berkeley Resistance, Richmond Wrecking Belles, and the San Francisco ShEvil Dead. These different branches display some of the most bad-ass gals in the Bay Area, rocking skin-tight spandex and neon makeup smeared across their faces. But the true appeal comes in their carefully honed skills: They slam each other against walls, push each other over, and take plenty of spills onto the hard racetrack floors. Since it was founded, B.A.D. has attracted more than seventy full-time participants, as well as a lot of hopefuls who injured themselves along the way. Not that they would ever let a few flesh wounds get in the way.
