Cam Huong Deli

So you're hungry, it's Sunday, and you work in Downtown Oakland. Sure, there are hip new places to pick up lunch, but today, give Chinatown's tiny Cam Huong deli a go for the tastiest-ever bahn mi. That's a Vietnamese sandwich for the uninitiated (although the Vietnamese think of them as French sandwiches). The price is right — a steal, actually — at $2.50 or maybe $2.75. Like a Cuban or a hero, bahn mi is a bread-and-meat concoction with lots of fixings, just what a sandwich should be. The foundation of the Cam Huong bahn mi is its crunchy-soft French bread from the nearby Cam Huong bakery just up the street. But that's not all. Deft sandwich makers load those day-fresh loafs with young cilantro, hot jalapenos, sweet mayo, an abundance of high-quality meat, pickled carrots, and daikon, and then wrap up the creation in butcher paper for easy carry away. We're fond of the Number Nine, grilled pork, although there are more than a dozen varities to choose from. Or even better, work through the list systematically from start to finish and see what really rings your bell.
