.Best Restaurant Musical Act

Hideo Date at Sushi California

Tucked away in a basement-like room in downtown Berkeley, there’s a hole-in-the-wall sushi restaurant where a very talented Japanese-American jazz guitarist plays every Monday and Friday evening. The Japanese food is good, too — with a few Okinawan dishes thrown in — but the soulful, peaceful music emanating from Hideo Date’s fingers steal the show on those evenings. Date plays blues, jazz, rock, and, on the week of Michael Jackson’s passing, hits from the former child star. On occasion, other guitarists, folks who play Okinawan instruments, or an upright bass player will join in. Date’s laid-back, old-school style helps make this one of the best hidden sushi restaurants in the East Bay, and keeps regulars returning for more.
