The tagline gets right to the point: "Race Culture Action." ColorLines means business when it comes to racial justice reporting. This seven-year-old project of the Applied Research Center has steadfastly provided incisive reporting and smart commentary when it comes to the politics of race and ethnicity. ColorLines has covered the detention of immigrants post-9/11, discussed linguistic profiling, examined the politics of hip-hop, profiled a female Muslim-American stand-up comedian, and exposed the racist legacy of the child welfare system. Not bad at all for a mostly black-and-white quarterly publication. ColorLines also runs RaceWire, a monthly news service for the ethnic press that provides news stories and op-eds focusing on culture and politics in communities of color, proving that the best way to change the media is to make it yourself.
