A newcomer to Berkeley might wonder how so many nurseries could survive within the same general area. But after a stroll through some East Bay neighborhoods, it's easy to see where the demand comes from. Magic Gardens, formerly a West Berkeley attraction, now serves the East Bay's demanding gardeners from a new three-acre Richmond location. It carries a high-quality selection of annuals, perennials, vegetables, shrubs, and trees, offering many hard-to-find and unusual varieties. The shade-plant selection is tops, for all those gardeners working under big old pine trees. Its garden-supply shop is stocked with earth-friendly amendments and a great selection of seeds and gardening accessories. The staff is very helpful and informative, and the nursery offers free gardening classes every Saturday at 10 a.m. throughout the spring and summer. The Magic Gardens newsletter is a gem by itself, with great gardening articles and information about nursery specials and classes.
