With windows overlooking the bay in every direction, Skate's is the perfect place to take those unadventurous in-laws from a land-locked state. Sitting above the water on stilts, it's impossible not to let your gaze wander over the waves to the San Francisco skyline, or watch seagulls dance overhead, or people wander the pier. Diners seem to have high expectations for waterside restaurants; there's a pressure to prove that it's not just the picturesque location that brings people back. And while the view is admittedly the real reason to visit, Skate's' menu of upscale California cuisine will leave them satisfied. Start your meal with warm brie and some cocktails. The lovely Rosemary Lime Cooler is a great but not-too-sweet girly drink, and the Vanilla Sky martini is a little more sugary without being obnoxious. Then stay for dinner, especially if you can watch the sun as it sets over San Francisco.
