As you ascend the stone steps of Berkeley's famous lookout point, it's common to have to shuffle around a giggly, teenage couple descending, arms linked. Take your lover by the hand and carefully make your way to the top of the carved staircase, then find a well-worn spot to sit. Are you a bit chilly, or can you pretend to be? Any excuse to snuggle close together and enjoy the breathtaking view: the high rises of Oakland, the Golden Gate and Bay bridges, and the San Francisco skyline beyond the glistening water. The perfect spot for a first date or sincere apology, Indian Rock has a way of turning everyone into a romantic. It's gorgeous during the day and a bit more private; at night the sparkling lights of the city draw more starry-eyed lovers (and occasionally rowdy drinkers). If you want to go after sunset, visit in the dead of night, when the teenage crowd is past curfew and the alcoholics have passed out, and you will have an entire glimmering city to yourself.
