Best Place to Buy a Complete Outfit for $10

Thrift Town

This place is a hipster's gold mine. It's dirt cheap, with a vast selection of clothing that's well-organized by size. It's also apparently far enough from the East Bay hipster epicenter that stuff isn't too picked over. Thrift Town is a for-profit business that works with nonprofits in five Western states. The San Leandro store buys donated goods from Community Assistance for the Retarded and Handicapped, a Castro Valley outfit that serves the disabled in Alameda County. After selling the stuff, the company cuts the nonprofit 51 percent of its net earnings. The store is equally generous to shoppers: Pants run $2 to $8. Shirts start at 99 cents, and you can find a decent pair of shoes for five bucks. Underwear starts at 49 cents, if you're into that kind of thing. "We don't put it out there if it looks too ookie," says store manager Terri Pratt, adding that many of the undies are new. Sales are a regular occurrence, and there's always a tag sale going -- if, say, a purple tag is posted on the wall that week, anything with a purple tag is half off. There are also housewares, cheapie furniture, bad novels, and costumes galore. But should you happen across a silver sequined fire suit with matching cowboy hat, be forewarned: You'll have to pry it from our cold, dead fingers.
