You would think that in the food-obsessed East Bay, restaurants would’ve mastered the art of catering equally to meat-lovers and vegans. And yet, very few have. But Gather’s chef, Sean Baker, has struck the perfect balance: He’s a known pork-lover who received the bulk of his training from Eric Tucker of San Francisco vegan restaurant Millennium. As a result, his menu has been known to offer at any given time up to ten vegetarian dishes, five vegan ones, and six with meat — ranging from rabbit to squid — in addition to eight gluten-free dishes. This doesn’t include Gather’s all-star “Vegan Charcuterie” dish, which includes four delectable vegan and gluten-free masterpieces. Freed from the shackles of menu restrictions, diners of all sorts of dietary persuasions can eat together peacefully.
