Lion Rock at the Oasis Restaurant and Bar 135 12th St., Oakland, 510-763-0404
How fresh is Lion Rock, the weekly reggae party held Wednesdays at the Oasis in downtown Oakland? Well, in the three years it's been on and poppin', it has cultivated a reputation as the most happening dancehall night on both sides of the bay. There are very few club nights here in the East Bay that can entice jaded scenesters from Frisco to come out and represent along with the locals, but Lion Rock is one of them. Residents Jah Yzer, Riddm, Poppa, King David, Dub Rocker, and Jah Mystic are all impeccable when it comes to selection, and the crowd is generally lively, but peaceful. In the summer months, the outdoor patio cools down the heat generated by all the whining and skanking taking place on the dance floor, and of course, there's plenty of Guinness and Red Stripe to be found at the bar. Get there early enough, and you can even enjoy a tasty Caribbean entrée or two before the bashment session commences, and you find yourself getting busy along with the latest Sean Paul 45 blasting through the speaker box.
